Dignitaries from 7 countries — from Samoa to Senegal — meet with Church leaders
Dignitaries meet with Church leaders and visit Church sites between Sept. 11 and Oct. 17
Government and religious leaders from around the world visited leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, from Sept. 11 to Oct. 17.
From Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa of the Independent State of Samoa to Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, Archbishop of Kigali, Rwanda, seven international dignitaries came to Utah and were received by Church leaders, according to a news release on ChurchofJesusChrist.org
Ambassador Cheikh Niang, the representative from Senegal to the United Nations in New York City, met with President Dallin H. Oaks and President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency and Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, along with other Church leaders, on Oct. 17.
His Excellency Batbayar Ulziidelger, Mongolian ambassador to the United States, came to Utah to present Elder Richard E. Cook, an emeritus General Authority Seventy, with Mongolia’s Order of the Polar Star. The award is Mongolia’s highest award given to a foreign citizen.
The award was given to Elder Cook for his impact in Mongolia and for organizing funds for hundreds of young adults to receive further education at BYU–Hawaii.
Coming to Utah to speak at the BYU Ambassador Lecture Series, Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S., His Excellency Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, met with members of the First Presidency and Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and toured Church sites in Salt Lake City.
On his trip the Mexican ambassador also met with Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
The Ethiopian ambassador to the United States, Mussie Hailu, spoke at the International Law and Religion Symposium hosted by Brigham Young University. The Ethiopian ambassador also attended a session of general conference and met again with Sharon Eubank, director of the Humanitarian Services for the Church.
Hailu was one of the delegates from eight African nations who took part in the symposium, general conference and meeting with Sister Eubank.

On Sept. 27, Mata’afa, the Samoan prime minister, met with members of the First Presidency and Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Two days later, the prime minister toured Welfare Square and the Brigham Young University campus.

Hungarian President Katalin Novák addressed students and faculty at Brigham Young University, where she talked about family and faith in God. After her address, President Novák met with members of the First Presidency and Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and other leaders.

Cardinal Kambanda started his visit to Utah with a tour of the St. George Utah Temple. After the visit, Cardinal Kambanda went to Welfare Square and the Humanitarian Center and then visited with Elder Ronald A Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Elder S. Mark Palmer of the Presidency of the Seventy.
