Utah has planned strategies to combat greenhouse gas emissions better and reduce the levels by 2020. The planned goal includes a 28% reduction in emissions over Business As Usual (BAU), over 27 million tons of carbon reductions over BAU, over 9 tons per person less than if the policies were not implemented and comparable performance with other Western Climate Initiative jurisdictions in all these metrics.

The current GHG reduction goals are according to BRAC policy options and are measured through an analytical process. Government agency experts, businesses and the public were involved in determining the goals. While it’s not a regulatory mandate, it’s a suitable policy. The goal is believed to be realistic and achievable. According to the plan, the greenhouse gases in Utah should be reduced to the recorded 2005 levels by 2020.
