A new kind of ‘tree’ has been invented which could absorb some of the harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The tower is filled with several materials that would absorb carbon dioxide from the air which could be the answer to the fight against global warming. (more…)

Several British mammals are struggling with the effects of global warming and habitat loss, and are set to become on the endangered list. Figures are showing that the population numbers for many of the animals have fallen drastically in recent years. Hedgehogs, Hazel dormouse, water voles and certain bat species are all struggling in the uncertain world that we live in today. (more…)

NASA claims that the government could slow down worldwide global warming by cutting down on soot emissions. Studies by NASA show that cutting down on soot would not only have an immediate cooling effect, but would also put a stop to many of the deaths caused by air pollution. When soot is formed, it typically travels through the air absorbing and releasing solar radiation which in turn begins to warm the atmosphere. Cutting soot emissions would be an immediate help against global warming, as the soot would quickly fall out of the atmosphere and begin to cool it down. (more…)

Environmental problems are becoming a big issue in today’s life around the world; so is the case in the USA. Recent opinion polls show that the common people of this country are quite concerned about clean air, water and land. This is a new phenomenon recenlty developed among the Americans. Historically the cities of USA were faraway from nature and there were lots of other hindrance too. But as the time moved on, grass route organizations sprung up to safeguard the natural resources and protect wildlife.
But the real revolution in the environmental world of the country took when the first Earth day was observed. In the same year, Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) was also established. The primary objective of EPA was to protect the human health and environment and preserve the environment as much as possible for the future generation. Besides this regulatory body, there are other certain key laws, which were passed e.g. National Environmental Policy Act, which assists to keep the nature clean in general; Clean Air Act to control the air emission, The safe drinking Water Act to control the quality of drinking water. The Clean Water Act helps to keep the water clean and The Oil Pollution Act was established to strengthen EPA’s ability to prevent and respond to catastrophic oil spills.
Similarly there are certain other laws, which were also passed with distinctive objective to protect the resources of the nature. All these steps gave the country a new life and also presented the future generation with a promise of a far better environment.

With the development of plastic, it is being used in a wide variety of ways. The common daily items are often made of plastic; or we use plastic to wrap around many things. This is not the problem; the main problem arises when we do not want to use that plastic. Disposing them is a very difficult task. The throwaway plastics are cheap and hence mostly preferred by people all over the world. This leads to a huge pollution problem as these plastic bags do not decompose for a long period of time and even need ultra-violet lights to breakdown. Plastics disposed off in the sea are polluting the sea as well as threatening the marine lives. Studies conducted show that there are about 3500 particles of plastic per square kilometer of sea in the southern African coast. The plastic pollution has increased by more than 190% in different beaches of South Africa.
The problem can not be solved overnight, but definitely can be reduced. For that it needs serious and urgent attention. The basic thing we need to do is to reduce our usage of plastic bags and other plastic materials in our day to day lives. The use of recyclable plastic bags should be encouraged, if possible it should be made compulsory by the Government. Whenever we go for shopping, we must carry our own bags and also encourage and convince others not to use plastic bags so frequently. Do not throw away plastic materials and plastic bags on roads and seas. This simple behavior of yours will encourage other to follow you and keep the mother nature clean and green.

Endangered Species
The Siamese Crocodile is one of the rarest and most endangered species in the world, with less than 200 of them remaining in the world. Plans for the construction of a dam in the Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia is threatening the lives of one-fifth of this already struggling population. The construction of the Chay Areng Dam will do untold damage to this unspoilt region; threatening not only the Siamese crocodile, but several other species living in this valley. (more…)

Environmental conservation has always been a topic for lengthy discussions, but up until recent times, global warming and climate changes were vague subjects, with no hard proof. Not surprisingly, the previous lack of attention to these issues have created a very gloomy outlook on our future. So, considering all this, what could be the biggest contributor to climate changes through global warming? Transportation – the man-made iron horses, flying machines and sea monsters, so to speak.
The question we have now is ‘how green is our transportation?’ The majority of the world’s vehicles are fueled by oil (petrol, diesel and kerosene). Even if they rely on electricity, the stations used to generate this electricity use fossil fuels for power! Excluding vehicle manufacture, transportation is responsible for 14% of the artificially created greenhouse emissions, mostly carbondioxide.
Automobiles, trains and planes are all responsible for this problem, but cars are the highest impact-makers. They release approximately six times more carbondioxide than a plane and seven times more than sea vessels.

With drug and narcotic smuggling on the rise, it should definitely not come as a surprise to any of us that a Utah man was recently convicted of trying to smuggle African ‘Khat’ to the United States of America. He was held guilty of conspiring to import hundreds of pounds of this African drug to the mainland and got sentenced to 18 months behind bars for his effort.
Of course, we all think that he is pretty dumb, but that aside, how on earth did he think that we was going to get away with it? He was not even taking the time to smuggle it into the country but had imported it in the guise of ’spices’. Being an import item, it would have been subjected to a myriad number of tests including a visual inspection by the customs officials themselves.
khat is an African plant, whose green leaves, when chewed tend to give one a high and are categorized as a drug. Most of the people in east Africa chew Khat in one form or the other. The Utah man must have thought that there would be a great demand for this amongst the African immigrants in Utah and so decided to import it. The Khat was all chopped up and flown to the United States and from there to Utah by way of a container truck. The customs officials in Utah decided to take a closer look at this huge consignment of Spices and were shocked to discover that it was actually a drug shipment marked to the Holladay residence. It must have been really insulting to the customs officials in Salt lake city to have their intelligence underestimated by a person who thought that he could legally import drugs into this country.
