Emeritus Seventy: Changes in Quorums of Seventy

New general presidencies of the Young Men and Sunday School were sustained in general conference, new members of the Presidency of the Seventy announced earlier were also sustained, and releases were extended to five members of the First Quorum of the Seventy, four members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy and 24 Area Authority Seventies.

Three new Area Authority Seventies were sustained: Carlos J. Garcia, 64, of Chino, Calif.; R. Randall Huff, 61, of Altadena, Calif.; and John W. Yardley, 50, of Panguitch, Utah.

Sustained to the Presidency of the Seventy were Elder Charles Didier and Elder Cecil O. Samuelson Jr. They succeed Elder L. Aldin Porter and Elder Marlin K. Jensen, who was also serving as Sunday School general president. (See Church News, June 16, 2001.) Elder Porter was among those released from the First Quorum of the Seventy, and Elder Jensen was assigned to serve in the Europe Central Area presidency.

Sustained as general president of the Young Men was Elder F. Melvin Hammond, who had served as first counselor previously. Elder Glenn L. Pace was sustained as his first counselor and Elder Spencer J. Condie as his second counselor.

Released as general president of the Young Men was Elder Robert K. Dellenbach, who is serving in the Pacific Area presidency. His second counselor was also released, Elder John M. Madsen, who is now serving in the Philippines Area presidency.

Sustained as general president of the Sunday School was Elder Cecil O. Samuelson Jr. of the Presidency of the Seventy. Elder John H. Groberg, previously second counselor in the general Sunday School presidency, was sustained as first counselor and Elder Richard J. Maynes as second counselor. Elder Neil L. Andersen, previously first counselor to Elder Jensen, is now serving in the Brazil South Area presidency.

The five members of the First Quorum of the Seventy who were released with emeritus status are Elders John K. Carmack, Vaughn J. Featherstone, L. Lionel Kendrick, Rex D. Pinegar and L. Aldin Porter.

These five brethren, all 70 years of age, released from the First Quorum of the Seventy, represent 100 years of service as General Authorities.

The four members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy who were released are Elders Richard E. Cook, Wayne M. Hancock, Richard B. Wirthlin and Ray H. Wood.

Each served from three to five years.

Released as Area Authority Seventies were Norman C. Boehm, Jess L. Christensen, Dale L. Dransfield, David W. Eka, James E. Griffin, Esteban Guevara, Ronald J. Hammond, Thomas A. Holt, Ernst Husz, Julio H. Jaramillo, Lloyd W. Jones, Seiji Katanuma, J. Grey Larkin, Haruyoshi Nakamura, Karl E. Nelson, Jesus Nieves, Rodrigo Obeso, James S. Olson, Glen A. Overton, William W. Parmley, Steven H. Pond, Michael T. Robinson, Jorge W. Ventura and Craig T. Vincent.

Elder John K. Carmack

Elder Carmack was called as to the First Quorum of the Seventy in April 1984, at age 52. His service as a General Authority included assignments as president of the Europe West, Asia, North America Northeast, North America West, Utah Central, North America Southeast and North America East areas. When called as a General Authority, Elder Carmack was serving as president of the Idaho Boise Mission. Prior to that time, he had served the Church as a regional representative for four years. An attorney, Elder Carmack was president of a law firm in Los Angeles and president of the Westwood Bar Association. Elder Carmack now serves as the managing director of the new Perpetual Education Fund.

Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone

Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone

Elder Featherstone was sustained as second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric on April 6, 1972, at age 41, and to the First Quorum of the Seventy on Oct. 1, 1976. Elder Featherstone served as president of the Australia/New Zealand, Pacific, North America Northeast, North America Southeast, Philippines/Micronesia and Utah South areas, and as a counselor in the Utah North Area. Other assignments included service as general president of the Young Men and president of the Texas San Antonio Mission. Prior to his full-time service for the Church, Elder Featherstone worked in corporate training for a large supermarket chain.

Elder L. Lionel Kendrick

Elder L. Lionel Kendrick

Elder Kendrick was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy April 2, 1988, at age 56. He has served as the president of the Dallas Texas Temple, president of the Florida Tampa Mission and president of the Asia North and Philippines Micronesia areas. Elder Kendrick served as a counselor in the Asia North, Utah South, North America Central, North America Southeast and North America Northwest area presidencies. Before his call as a General Authority, Elder Kendrick was a professor of health education and director of the Regional Training Center at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

Elder Rex D. Pinegar

Elder Rex D. Pinegar

Elder Pinegar was called to the First Council of the Seventy Oct. 6, 1972, at age 41. He was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy Oct. 1, 1976. For six years, Elder Pinegar served in the Presidency of the Seventy, the last two years as its senior president. He also served in the general presidency of the Young Men. Elder Pinegar served as president of the North America Southwest Area and as a member of the Asia, North America Southeast and North America Southwest area presidencies. He also served as president of the North Carolina-Virginia and Virginia Roanoke missions. An educator by profession, Elder Pinegar was chairman of the Educational Psychology Department at Brigham Young University.

Elder L. Aldin Porter

Elder Porter was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy on April 4, 1987, at age 55, to the Second Quorum of the Seventy when it was created on April 1, 1989, and back to the First Quorum of the Seventy April 6, 1991. He served in the Presidency of the Seventy from Aug. 15, 1992, through Aug. 15, 2001, the last five years as its senior president. Elder Porter also fulfilled assignments as executive director of the Missionary Department, in the presidency of the South America South Area and as president of the Utah South Area. At the time of his calling as a General Authority, Elder Porter was serving as president of the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission. He has also served as a counselor in the presidency of the Boise Idaho Temple and as a regional representative. In his business career, Elder Porter was an executive for a financial planning company.
