Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles echoed President Russell M. Nelson’s invitation to “lead out in abandoning attitudes and actions of prejudice” and “promote respect for all of God’s children” in his remarks during the Saturday evening session of October 2023 general conference.

Elder Soares urged Latter-day Saints to genuinely knit hearts together in unity and love, regardless of differences.

“There is no place for prejudiced thoughts or actions in the community of Saints,” the Apostle said. “We are fellow travelers as God’s children, equal in our imperfect state and in our ability to grow. We are invited to walk together, peaceably, with our hearts filled with love toward God and all men.”

Elder Gary B. Sabin, a General Authority Seventy, taught five gospel principles that he referred to as “hallmarks of happiness”:

  1. Build your foundation on Jesus Christ.
  2. Remember all are sons and daughters of God.
  3. Remember the worth of a soul.
  4. Maintain an eternal perspective.
  5. Be grateful.

Elder Joni L. Koch, a General Authority Seventy, spoke about understanding humility and following prophetic counsel.

“We all like to think we are sufficiently humble but some experiences in life make us realize that the natural prideful man often is very much alive within us,” he said. “There are certainly many opportunities for us all to improve this Christlike attribute.”

Sister Tamara W. Runia, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, encouraged members to focus on family relationships.

“In these last days, perhaps our greatest work will be with our loved ones — good people living in a wicked world,” she said. “And through this lens of love, they will see who they will become.”

The opening prayer was given by Elder Clark G. Gilbert, a General Authority Seventy, and the closing prayer was given by Elder Juan Pablo Villar, a General Authority Seventy. President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the first presidency, conducted the meeting.

The music was provided by a young single adult choir from Utah County, with Erin Bailey as director and Joseph Peeples as organist.
