Sister Amy A. Wright, first counselor in the Primary general presidency, spoke during the Saturday morning session of October 2023 general conference. She taught about spiritual preparation and what it means to “abide the day in Christ.” The following is a summary of what she said.

In the end, everything can be OK because of Jesus Christ. What does OK look like? “For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived — verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day” (Doctrine and Covenants 45:57).

Jesus Christ makes it possible to “abide the day.” Abiding the day means simplifying, focusing one’s efforts and being gatherers of the Savior’s light. It means more holy and revelatory experiences and daily spiritual nourishment.

“My dear friends, we cannot share our oil, but we can share His light. Oil in our lamps will not only help us ‘abide the day’ but can also be the means of illuminating the path that leads those we love to the Savior, who stands ready ‘with open arms to receive’ them. … He is the reason why it is never the end of our story. …

“Eternal life is eternal joy. Joy in this life, right now — not despite the challenges of our day but because of the Lord’s help to learn from and ultimately overcome them — and immeasurable joy in the life to come.”

• Sister Amy A. Wright has served as a counselor in the Primary general presidency since April 2021. She became first counselor in August 2022 after originally serving as second counselor.
• She has served as a member of the Young Women general advisory council, stake Primary president, ward Primary president, ward Primary presidency counselor, Young Women adviser, Relief Society teacher, Gospel Doctrine teacher and Cub Scout leader.  
• In late 2015, Sister Wright was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and given a 17% chance of survival. She described her battle with cancer as a “polishing and refining experience” — one that was “uniquely tailored” to help her come to know the Savior in a deeply personal way.
• Sister Wright and her twin brother were born in January 1972 in Salt Lake City to Joy Bailey and Robert Anderson.
• She met her husband, Brother James McConkie Wright, at the University of Utah. They were sealed June 24, 1994, in the Salt Lake Temple and are the parents of three children.

What has Sister Wright done recently?

• During the April 2022 general conference, she testified of the healing power of the Savior. 
• Sister Wright and Sister Michelle D. Craig, former first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, ministered in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador in June.
• At the 2023 Seminar for New Mission Leaders in June, Sister Wright taught from “Preach My Gospel” chapter 6 about developing Christlike attributes.
• Sister Wright and Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus, second counselor in the Young Women general presidency, visited several countries in the Pacific while ministering in September.
• Sister Wright participated in a Friend to Friend broadcast in September about blessings that come from making and keeping covenants with God.
