The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the locations for three new temples — one site for a new house of the Lord in Europe that was announced more than two years ago and two sites for temples in the United States that were announced earlier this year.

The three new sites are for the Vienna Austria Temple, the Harrisburg Pennsylvania Temple and the Winchester Virginia Temple.

They are three of the 153 temples that President Russell M. Nelson has announced since becoming President of the Church in January 2018. The Church has 335 total temples worldwide that are dedicated, under construction or in planning and design.

The three new locations were first published Monday, Oct. 30, on ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Additional information for each temple — including exterior renderings — will be provided later, with groundbreaking dates for each to be announced in the future.

Vienna Austria Temple

President Nelson announced a house of the Lord for Vienna, Austria, on April 4, 2021, at the close of the Sunday afternoon session of April 2021 general conference. It was one of 20 new locations announced at that time, including two others for Europe — in Oslo, Norway, and Brussels, Belgium.

Plans call for a multi-story temple of approximately 15,300 square feet to be built on an 0.80-acre site at Silbergasse 2, Vienna, Austria. The temple will be the Church’s first in that country.

In 1865, Elder Orson Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated Austria for the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Today, nearly 4,700 Latter-day Saints comprise 17 congregations and two stakes, which both pertain to the Frankfurt Germany Temple, located in Friedrichsdorf, Germany, a drive of some eight hours from Vienna.

The last two temples dedicated on the European continent were the Rome Italy and Lisbon Portugal Temples, both dedicated and beginning operations in 2019. No temples are currently under construction in Europe, but the Vienna temple is one of eight new houses of the Lord that President Nelson has announced, with others with sites identified being the Oslo Norway, Budapest Hungary and Barcelona Spain Temples.

Harrisburg Pennsylvania Temple

The Harrisburg Pennsylvania Temple is projected to be a single-story edifice of approximately 20,000 square feet, to be built on a 5.36-acre site at 605 Rutherford Road, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

President Nelson announced a temple for Harrisburg on April 2, 2023, in the concluding session of April 2023 general conference. It was one of 15 locations he identified that day, including a temple for Winchester, Virginia, as well.

The house of the Lord will be the state’s third, joining the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple, which was dedicated in 2016, and the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple, which has been under construction since August 2021.

The state is home to more than 52,000 Church members in 13 stakes and 106 congregations. A dozen congregations were organized in the 1830s, during The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ first decade, before the gathering of early Church members in Ohio, Missouri and Illinois.

Winchester Virginia Temple

The Winchester Virginia Temple will be a singe-story, 30,000-square-foot building on a 11.27-acre site at 200 Merrimans Lane, Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.

President Nelson announced the temple for Winchester on April 2, 2023, at the same time announcing the aforementioned Harrisburg temple and 13 other new locations for future houses of the Lord.

For the Church in Virginia, 2023 has been a year of temples — three temples, in fact. Besides the announcement of the Winchester temple in April and now the release of its site location, the Richmond Virginia Temple was dedicated on May 7, and the Roanoke Virginia Temple announced earlier this month, on Oct. 1 by President Nelson.

The Church as more than 97,000 members comprising 22 stakes and 215 congregations in the state of Virginia.
