From the bishops’ storehouse at Welfare Square, the Presiding Bishopric provided a glimpse into the welfare and humanitarian efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Last year, the Church expended over $900 million for helping the needy around the world,” said Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé.

“Helping others and reaching out to the people in need is really at the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

This new Church News video titled “The Heart of the Gospel” features Bishop Caussé and his counselors, Bishop W. Christopher Waddell and Bishop L. Todd Budge, explaining the difference between welfare and humanitarian aid and the Church’s efforts to build self-reliance.

While some may think of welfare as a “hand out,” Bishop Waddell said, “the Church’s view of welfare is very different. It’s not the hand out, it’s the hand up. It’s trying to lift.”
